For . For those of us who live in Southern Arizona, winter driving is usually not something we think about. But, even though we may not get the extreme winter weather as our neighbors to the north; it’s still important to make sure your automobile is winter-ready. Here are a few tips to make sure your car is ready for the winter weather.

Battery – On average, most batteries will last for about 5 years under normal conditions. Extreme temperatures can reduce the life of your battery, and cold weather is usually the hardest on your battery. So, chances are, if your battery was already giving you problems in the summer, it’s more likely to fail in the winter. You should have a voltage test on your battery to be sure it is in peak condition before winter. Be sure the battery terminals are clean and free from corrosion as well. If you have noticed slow starts, it would be a good idea to have your battery replaced.

Antifreeze – Also known as “coolant” antifreeze is crucial in maintaining proper engine temperature in the summer and winter. Water alone will not regulate your automobiles temperature, as well as antifreeze/coolant, will. Most antifreeze is designed to last about 5 years, but depending on driving conditions, may need to be changed sooner. Consult your owners manual for proper antifreeze change intervals. If your car is an older model car; it may be a good idea to flush and fill your coolant system before leaving on a long trip. Be sure to also inspect the water hoses and other parts of the coolant system as well.

Visibility –  You will want to see as well as be seen. Snow, dirt and road grime can accumulate on your windshield and headlights which will diminish your visibility. To be sure you can see and be seen take the following precautions:

  • Headlights – Be sure your headlights are clean and in good condition. Dirt, snow, and road grime can form on your headlights, inhibiting their ability to provide proper illumination.
  • Washer Fluid – Make sure you have proper washer fluid that is designed for cold weather so it does not freeze. This will also help de-ice your windshield.
  • Wiper Blades – Inspect your wiper blades and replace worn wiper blades with new ones designed to remove ice and snow.
  • Ice Scraper – Keep an ice scraper and brush in your vehicle for your windshield and other windows to ensure a clear field-of-vision.
  • Lock De-icer – You may want to carry a can of lock de-icer with you in case your locks freeze.

Tires – Be sure your tires are ready for the winter season by making sure they are designed for winter driving or all-season tires. In addition, be sure they are properly inflated and have adequate tread. As a rule of thumb, tires lose one pound of pressure per every 10 degrees Fahrenheit drop in temperature. Replace worn or inefficient tires before traveling in winter conditions.

Survival Kit – It’s always a good idea to plan for the worse when driving in the winter. You should keep a winter survival kit in your car at all times. The last thing you want is to be stranded empty-handed on the highway for several hours in a blinding snowstorm. Your winter survival kit should include:

  • Flashlights and extra batteries.
  • Warm blankets.
  • Battery jumper cables.
  • Survival knife.
  • First-aid kit.
  • Bottled Water.
  • 12-volt portable cellphone charger.
