How do AVs see around objects? : SelfDrivingCars

This is something I have not seen a lot of information on. For example, Waymo says they can see 300m in distance. Let’s say there is a large semi right in front of them. How do they see the cars or ahead of it? Are they simply betting on the sensors being distributed widely enough across the car to see around it? I’m assuming the main roof-mounted LIDAR would be useless in this scenario ?
