The extra stallions come with a switch from the 3.0-liter, single-turbo, six-cylinder N55 engine to a detuned version of the 3.0-liter, twin-turbo S55 inline-six from the M3 and M4. The S55 upgrades the N55 with items like stronger pistons and a lightweight crankshaft. In those larger M sedans, the S55 makes 425 hp in standard guise, 444 hp in Competition spec. A seven-speed M-DCT and a six-speed manual constitute the new M2’s shifting options.
Based on that single spy shot, a wider grille, larger front intakes, and re-sculpted side mirror housings factor into the design changes. Two new exterior hues, Silver Hockenheim and Sunset Orange, will join the four currently on the menu. Interiors should be decked out in Dakota Black leather with contrasting Kyalami Orange or Polar Blue stitching.
Bimmerpost says we should expect an M2 Competition reveal at the Beijing Motor Show in April. Production is slated to start in July, with deliveries commencing in the latter part of the year. Unit numbers will be based on demand, instead of being artificially limited. No idea on price yet, but the current M2 retails for $54,500, and the Competition Package on the M3/M4 adds $4,750. Having cemented a hotter M2 in the near distance, M fans are already wondering if the long-rumored, more widely available M2 CS or a 444-hp M2 GTS await over the horizon.
